Jeffrey Marcus – Personal profile and master videos
Jeffrey Marcus, MD was born in Detroit, Michigan. He attended University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and received a BS in Biomedical Sciences. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1994. He completed his integrated plastic surgery residency at Northwestern University in Chicago in 2001, followed by two fellowships at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto in Pediatric Plastic Surgery and Craniofacial Surgery. Dr. Marcus joined the faculty at Duke in 2003, as an Assistant Professor of Surgery and later was appointed Director of the Duke Cleft and Craniofacial Center. Dr. Marcus served as the leader for Children’s Surgical Services for several years and was named the inaugural Chief of Surgery for Duke Children’s Hospital in 2015. In 2017, he was appointed Chief of the Division of Plastic, Maxillofacial, and Oral Surgery.
Dr Marcus is a recognized expert in lip and cleft palate, rhinoplasty, and craniofacial surgery. His clinical interests include functional and cosmetic nasal surgery (rhinoplasty) for adolescents and adults, facial paralysis, plastic surgery of the ear, and the full range of pediatric plastic surgery. Dr Marcus serves as the Director of the Duke Cleft and Craniofacial Center and is the Chair of the Operation Smile Resident Leadership Program. He has authored over 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is the textbook editor of Essentials of Craniomaxillofacial Trauma. Earlier in 2018, he was appointed to the Editorial Boards for JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Dr Marcus has been an officer in The Rhinoplasty Society for many years and is currently President of the Society. In the field of rhinoplasty, he has led numerous national/international symposia through ASPS and ASAPS and has lectured throughout the United States and internationally.
Duke University has a long history of treating children with clefts, and was one of the first multidisciplinary teams in the United States. In 2008, Dr Marcus recruited an internationally renowned Craniofacial Orthodontist – Dr Pedro Santiago. In 2015, the Center welcomed Dr Alexander Allori, a cleft/craniofacial surgeon who is rapidly emerging as a thought leader in the study of cleft outcomes. Efforts of these individuals and others have established Duke as one of the leading centers for Cleft and Craniofacial care in the United States.
Dr. Marcus is actively engaged in surgical innovation and is the holder of several patents related to hybrid intermaxillary fixation, leading to products sold worldwide by the Stryker Corporation and which have substantively changed the practice of maxillofacial surgery in the U.S. and abroad.
