The transition to retirement is a biographical turning point for many of those affected. A large number of aspects determine the decision on “when” and “how” to retire. One aspect tends to be neglected in the scientific discussion: the influence of the personal environment or the household context. The present study is dedicated to this and focuses in particular on the influence of partnership-based power relations. Using a secondary analysis of qualitative data that arose in the course of an investigation into the coordination of the retirement decisions of heterosexual double-income couples, the power structures are examined more closely.
